W^ALRUS. On September 22d, I sent Astriip and Gibson tothe head of the bay again, to attain the Inland Ice, andstudy the condition of travel as far north-east as possi-ble. After dragging their sledges for five days andattaining an altitude of about 4600 feet, they decidedto return, owing to snow-squalls, high winds, and hardhauling. The thermometer was broken on the thirdday out, and the lowest temperature recorded up to I40 Northward over the Great Ice that time was 2° F. Astrup estimated they had madeabout thirty miles inland. They turned back the dayafter they lost sight of land. They were warm enoughwhen walking, and Astrup believed the lowest tem-perature was not more than — 10° F., and it was higherin their snow WALRUS HEAD. As a result of this futile attempt upon the InlandIce, my sledge party the following spring travelled tothe north-east coast of Greenland and back, over 1200miles, entirely without depots, and carrying theirentire supplies, except the musk-ox meat obtained onthe shores of the Arctic Ocean. While the sledge party was away on its second 1 Boat and Sledge Trips 141 journey, Mrs. Peary, Dr. Cook, Matt, Ikwa, andmyself started in the Mary Peary on September 23d,for Inglefield Gulf, provisioned for a week, to learnthe prospects for game in that direction, and intro-duce ourselves, if possible, to more of the Cape Cleveland, the north shore of Murchi-son Sound stretched away before us, a broad trap-dyke running up the slope, and a long, steep bank ofdetritus forming the shore. A few eiders were flyingabout, and new ice was forming in the Sound. Wepushed on
