Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944), British astronomer. Eddington pioneered the study of internal stellar structure. He theorised an upper limit on the mass of a star and also discovered the mass-luminosity relationship. This relates the intrinsic brightness of a star to its mass. In 1919 he made observations of stars near the sun during a solar eclipse. The results were hailed as confirmation of gravitational lensing (predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity). Other experiments have confirmed this effect, though Eddington's data is now disputed. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
