South end of Elgin Bridge, the first permanent bridge to be built across the Singapore River, with the Singapore Supreme Court on the right

Elgin Bridge which spans the Singapore River, linking South Bridge Road and North Bridge Road, is the first bridge of Singapore. First completed in 1820 as a timber foot bridge, Elgin Bridge was rebuilt five times before its present concrete form (reinforced with embedded steel) in 1929. It was gazetted as a National Monument in 2019, along with Anderson Bridge and Cavenagh Bridge (collectively known as the Singapore River Bridges).
