First clean inside the barrel or barrels by pushing througha tight-fitting cork slightly moistened. Dry out the barrelthoroughly and then oil with neats-foot, sperm, or Rangoonoil. All these oils are good. Gull fat rendered makes a verygood oil both for preserving and lubricating the working partsof guns. Next rub all rust off^ the outside of the gun with apiece of tow saturated with oil. To finish, grease over withStauffers grease. This latter is a capital lubricant not | 2Z8. CARE OF GUNS AND GEAR 229 easily rubbed off, and withstands the action of salt water betterthan anything we have tried. It is a kind of vaseline, sold bydealers in motor and engine stores. Two waterproof coverstacked to the inside of the cockpit coaming of the punt, so asto fall over the cripplers when resting in their hangers, keepoff a lot of spray, etc., when afloat. Punt-guns, if old ones, are best painted on the outside ofthe barrel. Before doing this they should be thoroughlycleaned free of rust, and then treated with a strong solutionof lime to remove any grease. The best paint, we think, isthe metal paint, aluminium, but the gun may be painted withordinary white-lead paint, if desired. The portion of thebarrel where the gun rests in its crutch, after painting, shouldhave sewn or laced tightly round it a piece of canvas (thisafterwards also painted), to prevent friction rubbing the paintoff, and rust eating into the gun barrel.
