King’s Fort, Boorhanpore

Burhanpur (Boorhanpore) was founded in the 15th century by the Faruqi Dynasty who ruled it until the Mughal Emperor Akbar conquered it. It was attacked by the Marathas and ceded to the Scindias until General Arthur Wellesley later Duke of Wellington occupied it in 1803. It changed hands again but in 1860 it was finally made a part of British India. There are many ruined monuments in the city including the King’s Fort or Shahi Qila, and the Shahi Jama Masjid built by the Emperor Akbar. The picture was drawn by W Purser and engraved by W J Cooke
