His technique was substanti- ally the same as mine, with the exception that his original sample- of sea water, after the NaOH had been added, were shaken for 24 hours instead of being filtered at once, so that equilibrium was insured. Since CaCO;! tends to remain supersaturated, it was suspected of being the cause of the discrepancy. A control experiment was therefore set up, in which the NaOH was added very slowly as a normal (instead of 10 normal) solution, in order to avoid local high concentrations of hydroxide, and the stoppered mixtures were allowed to stand with occasional shaking for one week.
