Its opening in the bladder is guarded bymucous folds. 320 THE URINARY SYSTEM Its blood supply is from the renal, spermatic, ovarian, middlehemorrhoidal and superior vesical arteries. Its nerves are derivedfrom the renal, spermatic and hypogastric plexuses of the sympa-thetic system. THE BLADDER The bladder {vesica urinaria), located in the pelvic cavity justbehind the symphysis pubis, is the reservoir for the urine. When. In the empty collapsedstate, as in the cadaver, it is somewhat cup-shaped. When dis-tended, it is about 5J2 inches (14 cm.) in height, 41-^ inches ( cm.)in width and nearly 4 inches (10 cm.) dorsoventrally, and thenextends into the abdominal cavity. In the female the width isgreater and the dorsoventral dimension less. Its capacity is about ipint (500 to 700 ) but is usually emptied when it contains 8 to 10ounces (about 300 ). THE BLADDER 321 The bladder presents an apex, a base, a superior and ventroinjeriorand two lateral surfaces and illy defined borders. The apex {vertex vesica) is best seen in the nearly empty bladderand lies just behind the symphysis pubis. From this the urachusextends to the umbilicus. The base {fundus vesica) is directeddownwar
