The massive central keep, threestoreys high, is 45 feet long and 34 feet wide, while its M. M. N. n 130 NAIRNSHIRE walls carry battlements and towers far higher than themore recent buildings. There is a deep moat, with thedrawbridge still remaining. The gateway, which leadsto a small courtyard, is protected by a massive iron gate. Cawdor Castle and loop-holed walls, and is crowned with a belfry. Thecastle stands on the edge of a rock on the right bank ofthe Cawdor Burn. A wall of enceinte was built on thesouth side and surrounded the original keep, but some ARCHITECTURE 131 portions of the wall were utilised in later additions to thefortalice. An interesting ecclesiastical ruin is that of St Ewenat Barevan. The walls, which are still intact, enclose aquadrangular space 70 feet in length and 20 in style of architecture is that of the First Pointedperiod. The chapel was used up till 1619. Among the modern public buildings of the town ofNairn may be mentioned the Public Hall, which includesthe interesting Nairn Museum and the Literary Instituteand Reading Room ; Nairn Academy ; and the Townand County Hospital. 13. Roll of Honour. The roll of honour of the county contains no namesfamous in literature, science, or art. The genius of theinhabitants seems to have run in other directions.
