ANTIGUA GUATEMALA, Guatemala — Next to Iglesia y Convento de Santa Clara

Photograph by David Coleman. Volcán de Agua dominates the skyline of Antigua Guatemala, its imposing presence a constant reminder of the powerful natural forces that have shaped the region. Standing at 3,760 meters (12,340 feet), this dormant volcano creates a stunning backdrop for the colonial city nestled at its base. The volcano's near-perfect conical shape rises dramatically from the Panchoy Valley, its slopes covered in lush vegetation that transitions from farmland and coffee plantations to cloud forests near the summit. The name "Agua" (water) comes from a devastating mudslide in 1541 that destroyed the original capital of Guatemala, prompting the city's relocation to present-day Antigua. In the foreground, Antigua's colonial architecture offers a striking contrast to the natural grandeur of the volcano. Terracotta roof tiles and pastel-colored facades of carefully preserved Spanish colonial buildings create a picturesque urban landscape that has earned the city UNESCO World Heritage status. This view encapsulates the essence of Antigua Guatemala – a harmonious blend of natural beauty and human history. The volcano serves not only as a breathtaking natural landmark but also as a silent storyteller of the region's tumultuous past and enduring cultural heritage.
