Mariner's compass. 18th-century journal page illustrating the improvements to a mariner's compass proposed by the British physician and inventor Gowin Knight (1713-1772) and the English engineer John Smeaton (1724-1792). This page is from volume 10 of the 1756 edition of 'The Philosophical Transactions', an abridged collection of papers from the Royal Society. The original paper was published by Knight and Smeaton in 1750 in volume 46 of 'Philosophical Transactions'. Both Knight and Smeaton were elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745 and 1753 respectively.
