Representative selection of the labels often found on the plastic wrappings used to protect and preserve perishable foods such as fruit and vegetable products in supermarkets. They illustrate the disposal problems created by single-use plastic packages seeing that most cannot be recycled and are non-biodegradable or combustible. Usually the types of plastics used are not identified but commonly used plastic polymers are LDPE – low density polyethylene for trays and LLDPE – linear low density polyethylene for films. Though plastics are considered safe, hygienic, lightweight and durable, where they are ending up in the marine environment, particularly microplastics, they are harming aquatic animals. Some authorities consider there is no alternative to landfill.
