Mushrooms may be grown in a warm cellar or shed in winter, or in the open air in summer. Take partially dry, fresh horse manure, and lay it in a heap to ferment; turn and mix it well every few days, and when well fermented, which will be in from ten to twelve days, it may be made into a bed about four feet wide by two feet deep, mixing it well together, and beating or treading firmly. As soon as the temperature falls to fifty degrees, the spawn may be inserted in pieces the size of a walnut, two inches deep and six inches apart; cover with a loamy soil about two inches, and beat down firmly and evenly.
