The extensive adoption of compressed air as a mediumfor performing various industrial operations has brought withit a demand for air compressing apparatus that is simple anddurable in design and construction, efficient and reliable inoperation and of as low cost as is consistent with good work-manship and materials. The necessity for economical production and the almostgeneral adoption of electricity as a motive power and itsflexibility of transmission render electrically operated com-pressors preferable to other types. In the development and placing upon the market of theXational 3VS type of compressors, the aim was to producea machine the utility of which would be unlimited and whichcould be depended upon even under most unfavorable condi-. Motor-Driven 3-Cylinder Air Compressor. tions, to operate economically and efficiently, and as far aspossible to be free from breakdown with its attendant ex-pensive repairs. The 3VS compressors have been very carefully de-signed so as to form most compact, self-contained units, bothdurable and efficient, and very economical in operation. Theyare a single-stage type of compressor with three verticalcylinders. Placing the cylinders on the vertical plane enablesthe machines to be built within smaller dimensions than thehorizontal type and also eliminates all strain and wear on thepistons and cylinder surfaces. All working parts are entirelyinclosed, affording protection from mechanical injury. The units are designed for continuous service at 90pounds pressure, but can be furnished for pressures up to 150pounds at a slightly reduced capacity rating. Driving poweris transmitted from the motor to the compressor by means ofa herring-bone gear and pinion. Each com
