Blue sky, white cumulus clouds view of a tree trunk, with tall slanting branch at one end, lying a on a vast expanse of dry beach sand, between Fairhaven and St Annes, Ribble Estuary, Lancashire. The view looks west towards St Annes. Wind-blown sand, blowing on the beach, has accumulated around the log. The tidal range on the beach varies. A 7 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind. A 10 metre high tide, in contrast, will flood the beach and and reach the coastline, leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reached of the River Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. This trunk stayed for a few weeks before being washed away. Others, in contrast, may be washed nearer and nearer the coastline, where they may be cut up and removed.
