Fig. 31.—The Sun as We See It. ered with numerous dark spots like freckles on the face of ared-headed boy, is called the photosphere, and it is this part ofthe Sun which gives out the most light. The second layer, which is called the chromosphere, is about5,000 miles thick, and if you could imagine the whole worldafire you would then have but a faint idea of what a mightyseething sea of flame this layer is. It is in this layer of burninggases that terrific explosions take place and red tongues offlame, or prominences, are shot out for upwards of 300,000miles. Around the chromosphere is another layer of flame which THE SUN, BRIGHTEST OF ALL STARS 33 extends for hundreds of thousands of miles in all last layer is called the corona, and it is as thin as the stuffof which dreams are made.
