Fromthe deck of a steamer there is, of course, a far better oppor-tunity to observe in detail the diversified beauties of the riverthan from the train. The scenery may be observed on bothside«;, and all the turns and changes of the stream are noticed. At the Upper Cascades the steamer discharges her passen-gers, on the Washington side of the river, and here a shortportage of six miles by railroad is made before re-embarking onanother steamer to pursue the journey to Portland. The voyage onward, for a couple of hours, is upon the mostromantic portion of the river. Castle Rock lies on the righthand, and on both sides, especially on the left shore, are to beseen foaming cascades pouring down the rugged faces of themountains.
