MODEL RELEASED. Listeria identification. Microbiologist holding an Analytical Profile Index (API) test panel. This is a method used to identify bacteria based on biochemical reactions between the bacteria and various chemicals placed in the API wells. This produces a pattern of colour changes on the API strip which is a signature for a particular species of bacterium, in this case Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria is the cause of listeriosis, a disease which can lead to septicaemia, meningitis and inflammation of the brain. Infection is caused by eating contaminated food.
