Father Richardprepared for him a statement of the condition of theTerritory, in which he then estimated there were about6000 Catholics with five churches and two priests—himself and his assistant. An epidemic of cholerabroke out in Detroit in the summer of 1832, and thevenerable missionary, while unstintingly devotinghimself to the help of the suffering, fell a victim to thedisease, of which he died, 13 September, 1832. Prep-arations had been under way even then to raise De-troit to a bishopric, of which, had he lived, he wouldprobably have received the Gabriel Richard Bishops.—(1) John Frederic Reze (the name isalso given as Reese in the German ecclesiastical rec-ords), who had been a zealous missionary throughoutthe territory, was appointed the first bishop 25 Febru-ary, 1833, and was consecrated at Cincinnati 6 Octo-ber of the same year. He was born 6 February, 1791,at Viennenberg, Hanover, and enjoys the distinctionof being the first German-born bishop of the Americanhierarchy. Drafted into military service in his youth,he served under Blilcher as a dragoon at the battle ofWaterloo. He was ordained in Rome, in 1822, andemigrated to the American missions in 1825, affiliatinghimself with Bishop Fenwick in Ohio. In 1827 hewas sent to Europe to secure German priests and finan-cial aid for the struggling missions and returned ina year, after success in both efforts. Through his ex-
