Picture by Roger Bamber 8 August 2003 Caligraphy Curator Ewan Clayton inspects a chart for signwriters written with a brush and ink by Eric Gill in 1909 inspired by a type by 18th Century designer H W Caslon The Alphabet is amongst many examples by Gill at Ditchling Museum including a collection of letters artwork and drawings collected by his brother Evan which the museum is trying to buy The lettering formed the basis of most of Gills subsequent type designs including Gill Sans one of the great classic typefaces because of its elegance and legibility
