First[-ninth] annual report on the noxious, beneficial and other insects, of the state of Missouri, made to the State board of agriculture, pursuant to an appropriation for this purpose from the Legislature of the state . hold in several orcharls aroundLawrence, Kansas, having spread from trees originally brought fromOhio. BOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE-BROODED. Not the least interesting feature of the southern range of ourBark-louse is its double-broodedness there. In Wright county, Mo.,though the young hatch only a month earlier than in North Illinois—or about the first of May—it is nevertheless double-brooded, accordingto Mr. Palmer; and in Mississippi I know there are two generationseach year, as I have received the second brood hatching about thefirst of September. Dr. Harris, years ago, asserted that there were at 80 FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT least two brools of this Apple-tree Bark-louse ea^h year, and, thoughhe was evidently in error, so far as his own particular State (Massa-chusetts) was concerned, and has been severely berated for the state-ment by subsequent writers, yet it finally appears that his language isnot so very wide of the mark! TRUE NATURE OF THE SCALE, WITH AUDITIOXAL PHYSIOLOGICAL Not to repeat the views formerly entertained by Mr. Walsh, and myseU, as to the nature of the scale, it is only necessary to state that my own opinion, that it is a secre-tion analogous to that which is so generallycharacteristic of the Ilomoptera^ has now be-come a conviction, and is fully supported bythe study of this and allied species. If welook at the common Mealy Bug, {Coccusadonidum Linn.), and take notice how themealy matter is secreted from the generalspores of the body, but more especially iromthe sides and around the anus, and then ima-gine this secretion to be more attenuated andmore glutinous, and to harden and thicken at the periphery, so as toconfine the louse, and cause it to add more and more behind, as itrequires more room, we shall get
