But the fact that in many places the Indians are Pro- testant in the winter when the times are hard, and Ca- ^ tholic when there is nothing to be gained, is somewhat startlinpf. We were up betimes next morning, and Pollen and Round got their kit together for their flying ride. At twelve, after a hasty lunch, they set off at a sharp trot; and about a couple of hours later the ox-train began to get under v/ay. Each animal drew a two-wheeled cart, and was tied^to the tail of the cart before him, so that one man was able to manage four or five carts, and by leading the foremost ox could direct a small procession.
