For theprotection of this multitude Atlantic Citymaintains a municipal beach patrol ofsixty trained men, equipped with boatsand other apparatus and under the direc-tion of an experienced surgeon. Thereis but little demand for their assistance,for the beach shelves off very graduallyand there are no dangerous holes or crosscurrents. Life lines are unnecessary. The smooth bays and thoroughfareslying between Absecon Island and themainland are ideal for small sail and IVIaiD of power boats, and for fishing and crab-bing, while in a few minutes the largeryachts can find unlimited opportunity onthe ocean. The Atlantic City and otheryacht clubs are the headquarters through-out the year for many private craftowned by visitors and residents. At theInlet Wharf a yachting fleet, staunchlybuilt and ably manned, at all seasons ac-commodates the public either individu-ally or in parties at a moderate Absecon Lighthouse, the life-savingdrills by the United States Coast Guards,and the manoeuvres of the fishing and oyster fleets are other interesting marinefeatures. The Automobile Course on the beachin South Atlantic City is famous for therecords which have been made at lowtides on its smooth, hard sand. Probablyno other beach races have been so largelyattended. New Jersey is famous for itsgood roads, none of which are more usedby automobilists than those which leadfrom New York and Philadelphia to thesplendid Boulevard across the mea
