Explanation of the diagrams.—The perpendicular line representsthe axis of the plant; the letter d designates a dormant bud; large F,a large limb or vegetative branch; small y, a small limb. The lettero indicates a node of a fruiting branch bearing a boll; the letter sindicates a square or bud at a node of a fruiting branch, while adash (—) represents a node of a fruiting branch from which thebud or the boll has been shed. The small a at the end of a seriesof these three last-mentioned characters means the abortion of theleaf bud and the termination of the growth of the branch, while theplus sign ( + ) signifies that the branch is still growing. The small ojust at the right of the perpendicular and slightly above the line ofthe fruiting branch indicates fruits borne on fruiting branches inthe axillary p
