Mercury's transit of the Sun. Optical image of the planet Mercury (centre-right, black dot) travelling across the front of the Sun. Mercury is the innermost planet of the solar system and is 58 million kilometres (km) from the Sun and million km from Earth. It measures 6786 km in diameter compared to the Sun which is approximately 860,000 km in diameter. Imaged on 7th May 2003.
