Near one of the sections of the wall, a monument was erected with photographs of some of the people killed while trying to cross the wall.
In 1961 the German Democratic Republic built a wall that divided the city of Berlin in two. Many families were divided, more than a hundred people died trying to cross into West Germany. This building became a symbol of the cold war between the two world political blocs. Finally the wall fell in 1989 allowing the reunification of the country.
