Cholera is an infection of the small intestine by some strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is spread mostly by water and food contaminated with human feces containing Vibrio cholerae. Originally thought to have been caused by "foul air," the real cause was identified by John Snow between 1849 and 1854.
