Maine woods and water folk . HEALD POND. PART II. MOOSEHEAD LAKE. OR a good many years Moosehead Lake, the largest body of water in the state of Maine, has been an ideal fishing ground, and many is the monster trout that has been drawn from its depths. There isa tradition which is to the effect that once upon a time, many, manyyears ago—how many I should not dare to state—a lake trout weighing noless than 37 pounds was safely landed by an enthusiastic devotee ofthe renowned Izaac Walton, but I have never been able to obtainany authentic record of such a fish, and the tradition is no doubtmore of a fable than anything else. However this may be, it is certain that a great many verylarge lake trout, and thousands of smaller fish have rewarded theanglers who annually cast their lines in Moosehead Lake. The lake is forty miles long, and varies from two to fifteenmiles in width. The lake is dotted with islands of all sizes, andits shores for wild and picturesque beauty will compare favorablywith the finest scenery
