Mayon volcano behind Lignon Hill, a forested parasitic cone on the volcano's southern side. Parasitic cones arise when magma (molten rock) leaves the main vent of the volcano and emerges above ground at another place nearby. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) has an observatory on Lignon Hill from where the activity of the Mayon volcano is monitored continuously. A plume of smoke is drifting from the volcano's summit. Photographed on the island of Luzon in the Philippines in 2002.
