Pulse 57.—{Gtifs Hospital Reports, 1875, P- 3I4-) if) In those cases in which the stenosis is not great, and inwhich the muscular wall of the left auricle is hypertrophied,the wave a, which indicates the auricular contraction, is in-creased in height and its base widened, in consequence of thefact that the contraction of the hypertrophied auricle is moreforcible and lasts longer than under normal circumstances.(See fig. 202.) In some cases the auricular wave, instead ofimmediately preceding the rise, which marks the commence-ment of the ventricular systole, occurs in the earlier part ofthe diastolic portion of the tracing, owing to the fact that therhythm of the auricular contractions is altered.
