Despairing of success here, Grant fell down theMississippi to Rodney, and crossing there on the 30th, pushed on the13th Corps to Port Gibson, in the rear of Grand Gulf, the 17th Corpsfollowing close. Sherman, who had been left above, now with some ofthe gunboats that had not run down made a feigned attack on HainesBluff, a strong position on the Yazoo above Vicksburg, and kept it uptill Grant summoned him to join the other corps below.
