En-countered floe-ice, the first seen, in ratherlarge masses during the whole Island is a precipitous, uninhabitedisland, culminating in Mount Misery, seven-teen hundred and sixty feet high. The colonyof sea-fowl to the south of the island, on smalloutlying rocky islets, is perhaps one of thelargest of its kind in the Arctic Regions. The adjoining sea is a great resort ofwhales, and on this account the IngebrigtsenCompany of Tromso has established a whalingstation on the most accessible part of theisland. Two whales had recently been caught, and one, seventy-five feet long, had beenhauled upon the shore, and was in process ofbeing flensed. It was an interesting spectacle, but the smell was atrocious. The watersswarmed with thousands of fulmars, feeding,vulture-like, upon the refuse from the whales. [i8].
