Hating so appropriated ihfra, the three Sundays in them received names significant of Iheir situa- tion. Thus, reckoning by decades, or tens, the Sunday preceding Quadragesima was called Qiiinqiiagesima, ot about the firtieih day befure Raster; the second Sexagesima, or sixtieth; and the third, Septuagesima, or seventieth. Shrove, or Collop Monday, is so called because eggs and col- lops, or slii^es of bacon, were the usual flesh-meal partaken of upon this anniversary, to avoid the necessity of cooking a joint just at tlie of the Forty-days' Fast. It is synonymous with the Carnival, and all its follies, still celebrated in Roman Catholic coun- ts i^s, aiiri which name is a corruption of the Latin words Carni vale, and literaUy means GMnd-b\e to flesh! Sjibove Tuesday, Fasti/ig Eve, or Pancake Tuesday, are names RANGE OF BAR
