Theinterior of the hearth is 2 feet by 3 feet, and 6 feet deep. The furnace lining consists of fire brick; magnesite brick and ground magnesiterammed for the sides and bottom, constituting the interior lining. The electrode con-nections are water-jacketted, and copper pipes half an inch interior diameter, whichconvey the cooling water to the electrode holders, and the electrode connections, alsocarry the current. Bureau of Mines No. 4. Electric Furnace. Tivani Steel Company. Belleville 1914 Mines of Ontario 181 The pre-heater consists of two 14-inch wrought iron pipes eight feet long, supportedon four firebrick cylinders, each being 12 inches deep and having a slope increasingregularly in diameter from 14 to 18 inches to allow the charge to slide easily downthe heated portion of the pre-heater. These pre-heater pipes are enclosed in the pre-heater stack, which has firebrick linings, and baffle plates with openings arranged insuch a manner that the heated gases circulate about the pre-heater pipes. The furnace is operated on a two-phase current, the transformers being connectedby what is known as the Scot connection. The electrodes are three inches in diameter, threaded so that they can pass downcontinuously, and are used up entirely, there being practically no loss from short graphite electrodes are used and pass through water-jacketted electrodeholders, and are
