China: Empress Xiaozhen (12 August 1837 - 8 April 1881), second Empress Consort of the Xianfeng Emperor. Hanging scroll painting, c. 1850s. The Empress Dowager Ci'an, popularly known in China as the East Empress Dowager and officially known posthumously as Empress Xiaozhenxian, was the second Empress Consort to the Xianfeng Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Hailing from the Manchu Bordered Yellow Banner Niohuru clan, she was a senior member of the imperial family, and served as regent for two young emperors: the Tongzhi Emperor and the Guangxu Emperor.
