We have spoken of a class of diseases which may be called semi-malig-nant; which, although incurable if left to themselves, destroying the tissuesin which they are situated, spreading progressively, and destroying theparts in their vicinity, and finallyfatal to life from constant irrita-tion, still are not really malig-nant ;âbecause they do not at-tack the lymphatics, do not ap-pear in several remote organssimultaneously, and do not re-turn if effectually removed. Tothis class belongs VIII. Lupus â a destructiveulceration of the skin commenc-ing with tubercular are two forms; 1st, thegenuine lupus, herpes exedens, ornoli me tangere; and 2dly, theherpes, or lupus non exedens. 1. Lupus exedens.âA portionof the skin of the face (mostly onor near the alee nasi) inflames, swells, and becomes of a brightred tint. The swelling frequentlyoccurs in the form of one or more18* 210 LUPUS. tubercles; not however indurated like scirrhus. The Inflamed surfacesooner or later becomes excoriated, and secretes an ichorous matter whichdries into a scab. After a time, a painful, foul, excavated ulcer forms;âvariable in its progress, sometimes stationary, or partially cicatrizing;âbut,in the end, destroying the flesh of the nose and cheek ; and causing cariesand exfoliation of the bones:âtill the patient, a horrid spectacle, diesworn out with pain ;âhis eye dropping from its socket into the chasmmade by the destruction of the cheek. This affection mostly occurs toadults;âespecially if of weakly scrofulous habits, vitiated by intemperanceand gross feeding. 2. The lupus non exedens is a milder form, and attacks scrofulous chil-dren. It begins with shining tubercles, which ulcerate; but the ulcerationhas a tendency to spread widely, rather than deeply;âcausing prodigiousdeformity by the successive ulceration and pucker
