This ritual is part of the preperations for the Passover holiday, in which most Israeli Jews don't eat bread and flour products for a week. Breads, wheat, flour, leaven and dough and are known in Hebrew as "Chametz", and Jews are prohibited from eating them or even keeping them at home during Passover.
