Detail of an 18th century ceiling painting Apothéose d’Hercule (Apotheosis of Hercules) by François Le Moyne (1688 – 4 June 1737) in the salon d'Hercule of the Château de Versailles, France - The canvas is the largest ceiling painting on canvas in Europe--480 square meters of surface area. The painting depicts about 140 figures representing Olympus attending the arrival of Hercules after his successful labors that raised him to the rank of God. The piece was seen as a metaphorical allusion to the merits of the French King.
