Hot Water for Washing Boilers Railroad Gazette. August 23. IJUl, p. 500. The Gazette comments editorially upon so-ne remarks madeby Mr. Quereau in discussing the report of the Master Me-chanics Committee on an Up-to-Date Round House. He said,in substance, that the temperature of a boiler under steam atworking pressure is 365 degrees, while the hot water used inwashing could ;iot be properly handled if its temperatureexceeded 120 degrees. Accepting these limits, the differencebetween the temperature of the boiler and the water used towash it out would be 245 degrees. The average temperatureof cold water used to wash with was 50 degrees, which whencompared with hot water gives a difference of 315 Quereau thought this difference so little in excess of thatwhich prevails when hot water is employed, that the added in-jury to the boiler incident to the use of cold water could notbe great. The Gazette points out that while the water in a boiler at150 pounds pressure is 365 degree
