Many of the Fairies, however,were fortunate in working their way back to the line held bythe regiment. They had gathered together a number ofabandoned muskets, secured an unusual supply of ammuni-tion, and posted themselves behind the breastworks for a re-vengeful resistance when the onslaught, which they felt wasclose at hand, should come. They were not long in their pieces on the works, they managed to fire fromeach shoulder at a time. One of their number would give thecommand, Fire by battery, and all would blaze away atonce. They had a noisy time of it. How effectively theirgunnery operated was never known. They earned, however,something by it in the shape of another sobriquet, and besides The Fairies they afterwards were frequently styled TheJackass Battery. William Kessler was of indomitable will.
