John Miers (1789-1879), British botanist. Miers was born in London the son of a jeweller, and showed an early interest in chemistry and the study of minerals. In 1818 he embarked for Chile with lord Cochrane, MiersÕ intention being the finding and exploiting of ChileÕs copper resources. However, on landing at Buenos Aires his wife fell ill and he stayed in Argentina. He studied the local flora in considerable detail, publishing his findings on his return to England in 1825. He made further trips to South America and became the leading authority on its floral riches. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society, and served as an editor of scientific papers.
