The emigration of the Puritans to New England, which com-menced with the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620, continuedunabated until 1640, when the Puritan opposition to ecclesiasticaltyranny in Old England became so aggressive that Charles I, aftereleven years of despotic rule, was compelled to again summon aparliament. The Long Parliament enacted laws which were designedto suppress the tyranny of the Church of England and to limit thedespotic power of the King. The enactment of those laws and thepolitical revolution which followed, for a time, checked the tide ofemigration. While it lasted, however, over twenty-five thousandPuritans had settled in America.
