Meissonier was pre-eminently a man of business, and he intendedto bring up his two sons to his own trade. The premature death of Madame Meissonier upset the arrange-ments for the boys education. Before he was sent to the LyceeCharlemagne, he had been for a time at a boarding-school at Chaillot,during an illness of his mothers. All he remembered of this place washis childish terror when he had to go back in the evening after a daysholiday, and pass the wood of the Champs-Elysees, so dark andmarshy. His return to Chaillot was suggested, but his father had anintimate friend at Grenoble, a professor, who was afterwards Dean ofthe Faculty of Science. This friend agreed to receive the child in hishouse, and let him attend the college classes. After a journey of fourdays and three nights spent in the depths of the stage-coach, wherean old lady took possession of the corner his father had securedfor him, Meissonier arrived at Lyons, and fell into the arms ofM. and Madame Feri
