Fernandez, a native of Jacksonville, Illinois, is a radio operator with 1st Brigade, 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, III MEF. Opposing forces, consisting of Marines from 5th ANGLICO and components of the New Zealand Army, wielded the Gustaf Bazooka, an 84 millimeter man-portable reusable anti-tank recoilless rifle.
