Together they highlight the Union naval blockade of the Confederacy, showing pictorially coastal fortifications as well as ships lining the coast and entering major harbors. It is truly remarkable that these views were the work of one man, Swiss born artist John Bachmann, because he did not have the ability to observe such a large part of the country from an elevated perspective, other than in his own creative imagination. While not particularly useful for planning military maneuvers because of exaggerated topography and inconsistent scales, they were intended to assist a living room audience in visualizing the geographic areas where the battles had and would Panorama of the seat of war, Birds eye view of North and South Carolina and part of Georgia.
