View S of Pant yr Afon hydro-electric power station opened 11 April 1904; the original powerhouse for Llechwedd slate quarry, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales, UK. Two Gilkes Pelton wheels each drove a Johnson & Phillips 175 kilowatt generator with any surplus electricity being fed into the national grid. New generators were installed around 2010. Water from catchment reservoirs generates electricity in the Maenofferen powerhouse & outflows into the pipeline feeding the lower station at Pant yr Afon before discharging into the Afon Barlwyd. The mines generate electricity twice from the same water & supply any surplus power to the national grid. Beside the A470. Pant yr Afon is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
