Breast cancer surgery. Image 3 of 9. Excised breast tissue containing malignant (cancerous) tumours. The lymph nodes and ducts are blue as they have been highlighted with a tracing dye so that the surgeon can locate them. In this operation, called a modified radical mastectomy, the entire breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes were removed in order to remove the malignant (cancerous) tumours. The surgeon will then reconstruct the breast by moving part of the latissimus dorsi back muscle into the breast and inserting a prosthetic implant.
