Photo from the pumice quarries of Gyali island, very close to Nisyros island, Dodecanese, Greece
Photo from Gyali island, very close to Nisyros island. I first saw this island (also a volcanic one, like Nisyros), from the ship. Gyali island is very close to Nisyros (in fact it belongs to Nisyros Municipality). When I arrived, I asked the locals about how could I get to Gyali and they told me that the only way, was to wake up very early in the morning and try to get myself in the boat, that every days carries the Nisyrian people that work in Gyali in the pumice quarry. So, one morning I was at the port of Mandraki at and I asked the workers if I could go with them. They told me yes, but they weren't sure if I could get permission to get photos, because these quarries belong to a company called "LAVA", which is the largest company in pumice production of the world ( tones per year!). Anyway I decided to take my chances. When I reached there, after a 15 minutes boat ride, the general manager, Mr. Christoforakis, not only gave me permission to take photos, but also gave me a great company, a fine gentleman, Mr. Costas Vasileiou, who was my driver and my guide in a small tour around this unbelievable island, that besides this amazing, "surreal" landscape, has also 2 beautiful beaches.
