When the British left, the place was only a shadowof its former self. About three hundred houses hadbeen destroyed, and the town was in ruins. Grovesand orchards roundabout had been laid waste, andmany of the rows of trees which lined the island roadshad been cut down. A Newport letter written in 1822 says, The wharvesare deserted, and the people are now so poor that there. The rocky shore at Newport are not more than ten or a dozen families who wouldhave the courage to invite a stranger to their introduction of railroads made the case of New- A City of Pleasure 231 port still more hopeless. Other places were bettersituated for modern transportation on the land andtraffic on the sea, and it had no water power to enableit to turn to manufacturing. Many of its people,therefore, went elsewhere to seek a livelihood.
