Etiology. Cold and the irritating qualities of unhealthy urine de-velop most, if not all, the diseases of the urethra, exceptlaceration. Inflammation of the part, called urethritis, isthe first development, and from the enlargement of the mu-oous follicles arise the urethral polypi, and the irritable urethralcarunculw. Foreign bodies passed into the urethra by intentor accident may cause inflammation, and lead to ulceration. Diagnosis. Chronic cases of painful micturition should be subjectedto ocular examination. The irritable carunculse are extremely sensitive tothe touch. Occasionally urethral polypi may be felt hanging from the urethra;they are not usu-ally sensitive to thetouch, but producestraining after mic-turition, and fre-quent desire tourinate, if they areattached within theurinal canal. Byocular examination we discover their attachment and are usually bright pink in color, and vary in size fromone-eighth of an inch to an inch in diameter. These tumorsmay be found single or multiple. If we find no external tumors in or around the urethra,we should inspect the interior of the canal as thoroughly aspossible.
