GIOTTO di Bondone (b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze) Legend of St Francis: 10. Exorcism of the Demons at Arezzo 1297-99 Fresco, 270 x 230 cm Upper Church, San Francesco, Assisi This is the tenth of the twenty-eight scenes (twenty-five of which were painted by Giotto) of Legend of Saint Francis. The five scenes from The Vision of the Flaming Chariot to St Francis in Ecstasy (No. 8-12) are characterized by inferior workmanship, especially in the figures, though they do contain some remarkable inventions. This painting is impressive for its depiction of a walled city, which is shown as a vertical mass of houses, towers, chimneys, roofs and roof terraces, all perceived as components of a single entity; the large church on the left, seen from the apse end, bears a strong resamblance to the Pieve di Santa Maria in Arezzo. *** Keywords: ************* Author: GIOTTO di Bondone Title: Legend of St Francis: 10.
